Shishunaga Dynasty (413-345 BC)
In 413 BC, Shishunaga overthrown Haryanka dynasty and established Shishunaga dynasty in Magadha empire. They conquered and annexed the Kingdoms of Avantis, Vatsas and Kosalas in about half a century of their rule to Magadha Empire.
:: Notable Rulers of Shishunaga Dynasty ::
1. Shishunaga (413-394 BC):
- Before becoming the ruler, he was viceroy of Varanasi.
- After getting the throne, Shishunaga continued aggressive policies of Haryankas.
- He completely annihilated the power of the Pradhyota of Avanti.
- He developed his second capital in Vaishali, probably to control Vajjis. First one was Girivraj (Rajgriha).
Note: Some accounts believe Shishunagas came to power in 430 BC.
2. Kalashoka / Kakavarnin (394-364 BC):
- Kalasoka transferred Magadhan capital to Pataliputra.
- He arranged second Buddhist council at Vaishali in 383 BC under the chairmanship of Sabbakami.
- This council ended in a permanent schism of Buddhism into
- 1. Sthavirs / Sthaviravadins (Orthodox Monks) - who strongly believed in traditional Vinaya
- 2. Mahasanghikas - who were liberal regarding aacceptence of new rules or 'Vinaya'
